Male Breast Reduction
Enlarged male breast tissue, also known as gynaecomastia, is a disorder that affects many.
What Causes Gynaecomastia?
Male gynaecomastia can be caused by the use of certain drugs, both hormonal and others; weight gain; disease or hereditary conditions.
The Procedure
Gynaecomastia removal will involve either liposuction or surgical excision, or both, to correct excess breast tissue which may cause sagging and stretched breasts. It may be present in one (unilaterally) or both breasts (bilaterally).
Gynaecomastia surgery is best performed when the breasts are fully developed, after adolescent-hood. This is because although adolescents may benefit from the procedure, they may also require further procedures should breast development continue.
Further information on the technique most suitable for your situation will be discussed with you prior to your operation.

Is It for Me?
When deciding whether the surgery is for you, consider the impact your breasts are having on your life. Gynaecomastia affects the self-confidence and wellbeing of many men. They may feel emotionally and physically uncomfortable in their bodies, and as a result, may avoid doing certain activities or wearing certain clothing
The procedure can significantly enrich a man’s life by helping him feel comfortable within his own body.
Potential Risks
All surgeries have the potential for complications. Gynaecomastia removal includes risks such as:
- Temporary or permanent numbness, which may be area-specific
- Death of nipple and deeper tissues
- Uneven breasts
- Changes in sensation in the breast and nipple areas
- Inflamed or itchy scars
- An allergic reaction to the anaesthesia used
- Blood clots which could possibly be fatal should they lead to a stroke
After Surgery Recovery
Each surgery and patient is unique, but after surgery recovery will generally include:
- Specific instructions from your surgeon as to your self-care
- A recovery from the liposuction in several days
- Recovery from excision in several weeks
- Avoidance of lifting and physical exercise
